Hull-based packaging and POS specialist Garthwest has invested in a Zünd G3 L2500 automated cutting system with camera recognition that reads registration dots printed outside the main printing area and cuts accordingly.

The UK's largest Minuteman Press franchise, based in Bath, has invested in a Valiani Optima V 250 flat-bed cutting table from Morgana Systems to provide a quality short-run in-house cutting facility.

I have come to the conclusion that printers are for printing and cutters are for cutting. Yes, there are some great bits of kit that will do both in one go for you but, and let's be honest, that is only about convenience as opposed to volume production. Why? Because 99% of the time your lovely contour cut graphics will also need laminating, so the printed matter has to be removed from the printer and laminated offline, then reset once more into the printer for cutting. Because of this, your production speed has dropped off straight away.

Point-of-sale specialist Wilmot-Budgen has doubled production speeds on two-sheet cutting processes following the installation of a brand new Zünd D3 XL3200 digital cutting table, combined with its existing Zünd Board Handling System.

If you didn’t make it to Drupa you would have missed Esko launching its new CorruSpeed tool, a brand-new tool for its Kongsberg family of cutting tables designed for high-speed cutting of corrugated board without oscillating. The result is cleaner, more accurate cuts comparable to conventional die cutting, bringing the highest quality of digital finishing to the corrugated market. Tools are available for Kongsberg C Series, X Series, XP and XE cutting tables.

Bobcat Digital has installed a Zünd G3 L2500 from CMYUK following a visit to Sign & Digital UK 2016 earlier this year. The investment will enable the company to keep pace with print production from a recently installed EFI VUTEk wide-format printer by automating the finishing process.

Vivid Laminating Technologies has launched a smaller footprint double-sided duplex laminating system able to laminate, foil and create spot UV-style effects on SRA3 portrait sheets.

Swanline Paper & Board, the recently launched materials division of Swanline Print Ltd, has installed a Kongsberg C24 cutting table from Esko, featuring multi-zone operation and robotic loading and unloading.

Quality Print Services (QPS) has added Easymount laminators to its range along with the Vivid Boss range of wide-format pressure-sensitive laminating films following its appointment as a reseller for Vivid Technologies.

Dönitz Displays & Verpackunge, based in Scheeßel, Germany, has invested in a Kongsberg XN22 cutting system from Esko in order to be more responsive to customer requirements for fast turnaround display prototypes and small series production. The machine replaces a 15-year-old cutting system from another manufacturer that had passed its technical peak.

Canon Europe demonstrated an interesting new prototype workflow automation solution – provisionally named ‘View & Cut' – at Drupa 2016 in conjunction with Zünd to further automate the finishing of printed output from Canon wide format printers on the Océ ProCut G3 and Zünd S3 flatbed devices.

The company says it plans to introduce two new additions to its Matrix range at Drupa, alongside a new wide format foiling laminator and a range of special effect foils.
