Brazilian sign & display companies Signmaker and Uranus2 boost business with Anapurna H1650i LED

February 05, 2019

The unstoppable phenomenon of UV printing is slowly but surely taking over printing plants. One of the reasons behind this trend is the gradual introduction of new printing devices, which are more affordable but deliver the same results. A good example is Agfa’s recently launched Anapurna H1650i. The new 1.6-meter wide hybrid printer and LED curing system prints on a wide range of rigid and flexible media, as well as on flexible substrate rolls.

In addition to being more energy-efficient and longer lasting than conventional UV lamps, the LED system’s “cold curing” technology allows printing on heat-sensitive materials. Therefore, the printer can work with a broader range of substrate types. Pedro Dourado, director at Uranus2 – a leader in the visual communication market in Brazil’s northeastern region – was one of the first to acquire and benefit from the Anapurna H1650i in the country. According to him, the company received the equipment just over a month ago and has already used it to print on polystyrene, PVC, MDF, acrylic, acetate, PETG, cardboard, backlit film, canvas, and even fabric. These media were all used for fine art, signage and promotional material applications. According to Dourado, most of the clients are amazed by the quality of the relief printing on some of the pieces.

"This equipment has given us a competitive edge because of its versatility."

Fabricio Perez, director at Signmaker, also recently acquired the Anapurna H1650i. The São Paulo-based company has leveraged the printer’s potential to print on canvas, PVC plates, adhesives, ACM and fabrics across a wide range of applications, such as banners, adhesives and displays for POS and public signs. Perez talked about one of the most successful projects produced with the machine: “We developed a project for a high-end hospital here in São Paulo. We provided decorative adhesives to different wings of the hospital. The client was very pleased with the quality of the images and the transparent adhesives with white printing for glass surfaces.”

White ink

Printing white is definitely one of the flagships of the Anapurna H1650i. In addition to the ink-saving Thin Ink Layer technology, white printing is carried out through a multi-layer functionality (pre, intermediate and post) to deliver unique materials with a higher added value. Uranus2 has taken advantage of these features and used them in several white printing applications. One of the best examples is relief printing. According to the Signmaker director, “white printing is a huge plus for us, because we manufacture a lot of transparent materials, such as adhesive vinyl and plates. In addition, our clients often ask for white as a spot color. And Agfa’s white ink has exceptional performance and durability.”

1.6-meter UV

In addition to the white ink, Agfa’s LED UV printer works directly on several different substrates, which makes the product much more versatile. That is one of the reasons why, despite being 1.6-meter wide, the machine does not compete with solvent technology printers (which are mostly available in 1.6-meter models as well). The purpose of the Anapurna H1650i is to complement the production process. That’s exactly why Perez decided to purchase this engine: “The idea was to expand our offering and leverage Signmaker’s production plant, which already had a 2.5-m unit and a flatbed printer. We chose the 1.6-meter wide printer because it required a relatively low investment for its capacity,” he says.

Potential

Very pleased with the support given by the supplier, Dourado underlines how important the Anapurna H1650i is to Uranus2: “A good example are the lower raw material and labor costs in polystyrene applications, which we can now print on directly.”

Besides printing directly on a wider range of media, the printer works with 45-mm thick materials, in production modes varying from draft (63 m²/h) to high quality (7 m²/h).

It is important to note that Agfa’s end-to-end solution expands beyond the printer, to include original inks and Asanti – the workflow software controlling the entire process from pre-printing to finishing. This makes the equipment much more reliable, which is also why Signmaker acquired the Anapurna H1650i through Top Supply – Agfa’s distributor in São Paulo.

According to Perez, the printer, which is the first LED UV equipment acquired by the company, leveraged Signmaker’s capacity: “I’m very confident that this is the first step towards updating our entire production plant. Our clients demand increasingly higher quality across all of our solutions. We’re very satisfied with the Anapurna H1650i so far.”
