The global COVID-19 pandemic has led many businesses to change focus and find new work in unlikely places. One such story is that of German Fujifilm customer Copy Service, in Moenchengladbach. In spring 2020, the pandemic brought a temporary halt to all professional football across Europe, including the German Bundesliga. The season resumed after several weeks, but with one key ingredient missing - the fans.

Personalisation and customisation are far from novel concepts in the graphics market – but in the stubbornly analogue world of print for metal packaging, they still very much are.

One of Thailand's biggest metal packaging printers, SWAN, has been supplying high-quality printed metal sheets to a wide variety of canmaking customers for more than half a century. The company was one of the first in Asia to recognise the transformative potential of inkjet technology to the metal packaging market and, in late 2019, it became the first company in the region to invest in Fujifilm's revolutionary digital inkjet printer, the Acuity B1.

To formulate ink adhesion, we should first look at surface tension and energy. The first step is the initial interaction between ink and media, which is driven by the ink's surface tension and the surface energy of the media. In general terms, the ink needs to have a lower surface tension than the energy of the media to be able to 'wet' the substrate. Without this, the ink would reticulate and mottle - basically the effect you'd see with water on glass.
